How do I become a Firefighter?

The first step to becoming a Firefighter is commitment-due to the requirements.  You must be able and willing to train and learn constantly, answer alarms at all times of the day and night no matter what the weather is, and keep yourself physically fit to do the job.

Firefighters do a lot more than fight fires.  Over the years, firefighters in the District have taken on more roles and responsibilities which include auto extrication and specialized rescue operations.

There are different classifications of firefighters in the East Fishkill Fire District. An exterior firefighter does not go into buildings that are on fire and/or not safe to be in. You can assist with outside operations and fight fires from an exterior position. An interior firefighter enters structure fires and performs search and rescue operations.

To become and exterior firefighter you will need to complete the Scene Support Operations class.  It consists of 27 hours of instruction that is usually scheduled in 3-hour sessions held twice a week. Interior firefighters must complete the Firefighter 1 Course, which is a 78 hour course usually scheduled in 3 hour sessions twice a week and a couple of 8 hours sessions held during the day. You must also complete the Mask Confidence Course, which is a 15-hour course. You must also maintain yearly a current SCBA Certification and a physical.

In accordance with Federal and State law all members of the department must complete 8 hours of safety training that is job specific. This training is incorporated in the regular training sessions of the District and its companies. We meet every Monday night for equipment checks, training and meetings. There are also other training sessions during the week that can be attended.

It sounds like a lot and it is, the job is demanding but the rewards are endless!!
